I wanted to like this book...you got a deaf woman wanting to prove she doesn't need pampering and can still work an elite career. She works with files/cold cases and after she apprehends a bad guy on her vacation, just from using tricks and knowledge, she's offered a task and a chance to prove herself: pose as a deaf maid in a leading mob boss's household. She ends up with two men attracted to her, a little girl stealing her heart, and semi sex on the laundry room floor.
But a couple of things bothered me.
This book was published in 2005, and I being a deaf woman myself, would like to know how the heroine came across this magical, fabulous cell phone she uses. Was I just not rich enough? Are they super expensive and only available to the elite? Because in those days, I had to call a relay operator and say "go ahead" after I spoke to let the operator know to switch plugs or whatever, then the operator would type what the other person said onto a screen. But a phone that just has some kind of built in operator? No...
Second of all, I didn't appreciate this:
"It wasn't possible that two men would be attracted to me. I was handicapped, for Christ's sake. What did I have to offer anyone?"
Feelings like that are normal in high school, not at 28. I was taken aback by this attitude and though we do at times struggle with self confidence, twenty-eight years old should know better and for some reason, this was a slap in the face to me. I tried to chalk up to the heroine only being deaf one year, but it bothered me.
Between all this and the just...over predictability and the endless fluctuating of the heroine over "good guy or bad guy? I don't know" and the sexual awareness I didn't really feel as well as constantly being reminded it'd been over two years... I had lots of trouble with this book.
I think the mystery was okay and there were enough intense moments to keep me intrigued and I give the author thumbs up for attempting this so three stars.

Silent Weapon Silhouette Bombshell Book 33 edition by Debra Webb Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Two years ago Merri Walters was an elementary school teacher, but suffered total loss of hearing from an illness. The Nashville Police Department hired her as an archivist filing cold and closed cases. She comes across a misfiled folder and after looking at details obviously missed by the cops on the case and her predecessor decides to solve the case, but once she has the proof she does not turn to her family of police and fire officers; she asks Homicide Detective Steve Barlow to complete the bust, which he does.
The brass is impressed with how well the deaf civilian performer and decide she is perfect for an undercover assignment to catch a much bigger fish than Sawyer who she just nabbed with Barlow's assistance. Steve is heatedly opposed to her doing this because he insists she is untrained and has a handicap. He hides that he is attracted to her and worries for her safety. However, Merri has to prove her worth especially to herself and accepts the opportunity though that places her in danger.
More a police procedural than a romance, SILENT WEAPON is a fine tale starring a heroine who overcomes her recent physical handicap by being all she can be. Merri is a terrific lead protagonist and Steve is her ideal counterpoint. The undercover work is handled quite nicely although the romance between the pair is rightfully kept on the backburner (lovemaking and atheism are not common in foxholes). Debra Webb weaves a solid thriller that hopefully will star the Homicide Detective and the detailed oriented archivist in a future story perhaps with a wee bit more romance.

I've read quite a few of Debra Webb's books now but this is by far her best one. I LOVE the way she deals with Merrilee's attraction to truly bad boy Mason and the handsome Detective Barlow. So nice to read a book where there were two heroes I really could like and a lonely heroine who had lost her confidence with men since a virus had destroyed her hearing.
My favourite part where Merri goes to sleep after an exhausting day of learning how to defend herself and Barlow jumps on top of her and attacks her in her bed. She knows it's him by his smell but she still punishes him - such a good scene!
The other part I really enjoyed was how the criminal Mason interacted so gently and sweetly with Merrilee. Her vulnerability brought out his tenderness and I loved the way he saved her life at the end. Mason's gentleness with Merri was contrasted with the rough single-mindedness of Detective Barlow and I liked how conflicted she was at the end in the hospital. This isn't a traditional romance but it's better in my opinion because she dares to have an anti-hero who treats the heroine better than the hero does.
I like this story better than her best Colby Agency novels and even better than her highly rated 'Faces of Evil' series.
