I have been volunteering for a local shelter for 15 years, and have helped with a few smaller rescues over the years. With the recent influx of "southern" dogs, I couldn't wait to read this. This book is well written and spot on! My shelter participates in the Petsmart Rescue Waggin' program, and also receives dogs from another transport on a monthly basis. These dogs are up to date on vaccines prior to transporting. While I understand everyone's point of view, the bottom line to me is we are saving lives. Some rescues are breed specific, others rescue disabled or senior dogs. If you rescue the latter, they could remain in rescue for months, causing other dogs to lose out on their chance at a forever home. Who are we to judge? I have never been to any of the areas down south which were mentioned in the book, however, I have heard the horror stories from friends in the rescue world. When I asked one of the shelter staff members why we took in dogs from one of these southern shelters his response was "they asked for help".

Dogland A Journey to the Heart of America Dog Problem Jacki Skole 9781618220387 Books Reviews

DOGLAND is a nation changing book. It moves from one family's eventful selection of a rescue dog into a blueprint for sweeping and positive changes to help all rescue dogs and cats. The book inspires readers first to check the No-Kill policies of their local humane and rescue organizations, then to take needed actions. Choices range from phone calls, emails, and letters to editors questioning current policies and offering ideas for No-Kill, for dynamic Foster Care programs, and more.
Readers are challenged to figure out what WILL prevent more unwanted animal births. Maybe not allowing adoptions unless permanent or back-up residence with references can be shown? Or, more radical changes like paying people to bring pets into a new and vast network of Mobile Spay and Neuter Vans?
A much needed addition will be a Website showing, state-by-state, current progress on the ending of No-Kill Shelters, on setting up new Foster Care programs, etc. Addresses, phone numbers, and email contact information for government agencies as well as for Shelters would be kept active to show change. A Website would also include yearly state-by-state euthanasia of healthy dogs and cats total numbers, with charts hopefully reflecting decreases. Updates would include all programs which are working well.

Thank you for these profound truths.
Great read
This is an important expose of the American animal shelter industry, especially in the South. At times it reads like a mystery novel, but it is also disturbing and distressing. Family and pet anecdotes make it an interesting read. It is well-researched and written. I highly recommend it.
Dogland is such an informative book about a very important issue. It is obvious that a ton of research went into this and the writer is extremely passionate about this subject. If you want to learn more about the problems animal rescue faces and some of the potential solutions for shelter overcrowding then this book is a must read.
I have a rescue dog from the south so I was drawn to this book since it was close to home for me. I learned so much more about the problem and wish I could rescue more dogs each week. The author meticulously researched the topic and her extensive interviews made the issue so real. I strongly recommend this book to any animal lover but especially those who care enough to help out in any way.
A thoroughly researched and eye opening experience into the world of rescue dogs. I have owned both purebred as well as rescue dogs and there is a soft spot in my heart for the later. This books gives a detailed background of the rescue world and the many challenges it faces . Jacki Skole makes me want to give my heart and my money to this wonderful cause.
This book is not only beautifully written, but extensively researched and informative. The author makes it as readable as a novel and a wonderful learning experience. I honestly feel that there should be a copy of "Dogland" in every veterinary office for people to peruse, borrow, or buy themselves so that they are aware what really should be known before adopting a new canine family member. Because the one thing the author makes extremely clear is that a dog becomes part of your family and your heart very quickly and it is best to adopt with knowledge aforethought, not after a tragic and potentially expensive loss.
