Unburying Hope Mary Wallace 9780985420703 Books

There are some books that can be nibbled away..... a chapter while you wait in the car pool line, 400 calories worth at the gym, and a chapter before you go to bed. This is the kind of book that you just have to devour.... after two pages I was sucked in and pretty much HAD to find out what was going to happen to Eddie, the tortured, mysterious (and gorgeous- one of my favorite things about reading is casting all the characters in my own special way,so I may have made Eddie a bit more Bradley Copperish than the author intended) and Celeste, the most endearing and hopeful grafitti artist ever, and hilarious Frank, my very, very favorite character..... Darling, you will just have to check this book out for yourself. But don't say I didn't warm you: be prepared to not be be able to stop reading it once you start.

Unburying Hope Mary Wallace 9780985420703 Books Reviews

I struggled to get into this book, it has a very weird writing style, I can't explain it. An evasive writing style, not really addressing any issues, everything is very vague.

Definitely a rant on Detroit and the state it is in, and a rant on the use of meth.

At least a few mysteries were sorted out in the last page.
Mary Wallace's impressive debut follows the story of Celeste, a young woman who reaches out to haunted Iraq war vet Eddie, as she battles her own demons in the ruins of modern-day Detroit. Despite moving to Hawaii to support his dream, leaving her only friend behind, and taking his young daughter under her wing, Eddie disappears for days on end. Are drugs the culprit? Or the disturbed memories of a war he must now forget?

The settings are well-drawn, as are the secondary characters, in particular Rosalinda, Eddie's young daughter, who struggles with her own fears.
I've read hundreds of novels over the years, in one span of a couple years reading ebooks from Project Gutenberg starting with Jane Austen's first novel then through all her novels, in order, then back to authors Austen admired, starting with their first books and reading through their novels, all the way from the 1700s to the early 1900s. I found some amazing writers this way, with some wonderful stories.

This novel is very much in that style. It's engrossing. It captures a moment in time and place. It challenges the characters and the reader to think about what they're reading and the lives they lead today.

But all great fiction lives or dies on their characters. This novel has some really fun engrossing characters, starting with Celeste and Frank, stuck in dead end jobs in a dead end city, yet warm and loving to each other as they have some amusing adventures. Then Eddie wanders into the story and makes it even deeper. Celeste is challenged to grow beyond the world she has in mind for herself, to embrace Eddie and his mother and his daughter. My favorite character, though, is the little old Hawaiian grandmother, Malia. She's a cutie. But she's also tough as nails and still hopeful despite awful experiences.

I also loved this novel would not let me put it down. It was very easy to read, evening after evening and on the train, pulling me in over and over. Good stuff. I highly recommend this as an insightful story with a lot of good characters doing their best to get by and have some fun doing it. Definitely buy it.
This book really touched my heart. I fell in love with Celeste. She great up in Detroit and watched her city fall apart. Not giving anything away she clings to the word hope mentally and physically. She falls in love with Eddie who has his own issues. But Celeste's loyalty, and again hope keeps her with him. They leave Detroit and move to Hawaii and enters his daughter with her own set of things to deal with.
I found this book very timely with what our country is going through. It touches on war, drugs, PTSD, relationships...The book has an energy that keeps you reading but also savoring the relationships and the feeling that all could be fixed if only they would see. You'll find yourself understanding that if you love someone there is always hope. You just have to believe it.
This is such an incredible book, I was hooked within the first few pages due to how great it was written, the author really has a remarkable style. There's so much emotion in this book; I felt like I could really feel what the writing was trying to express and with so many different experiences and twists in the story - it left me wanting more and more. The characters are all very unique and almost seem real due to the amount of detail the author has put into their backgrounds and personalities, it definitely makes the book very high quality. I respect the author a lot due to how she incorporated some real life instances and issues into the story which makes the read have a very authentic and raw feel to it. Honestly, it can really be quite thought provoking at some points - I definitely recommend this book
This book was highly recommended by a friend of mine, I was somewhat reluctant because I don't normally read a lot of romance novels, but that was soon forgotten as jump into reading this book.

The main story revolves around Celeste and Eddie two lovers trapped in a world that has gone to hell, but nothing can break their spirit. The story encompasses many hard knocks and tough breaks throughout.

The story covers a lot of what you hear and read about on the news today. The economy not being what is a few years ago and lots of squandered opportunity. The ongoing war efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

So to put this all together Eddie is damaged goods, thanks to be putting horrifying situation in war and Celeste is dealing with the fight at home to make ends meet in a dying town on the home front.

You see two very strong individuals fight the daily fight as the pull together to form a stronger team together. How this all happens is up to you to find out I don't like given out the details.

For someone that skeptical from the start I can honestly say now that this is one of the best books I've ever read and well worth the read.
