Dare Me Eric Devine Books

The first word that comes to mind about Eric Devine’s newest YA novel is REAL; totally and frighteningly real! In a world where the next big thing is blasted all over the internet within nanoseconds Dare Me is a fast-paced story that will resonate strongly with the tech-savvy and YouTube crazed generation. Written in the perspective of a high school student in his senior year, Ben, Ricky, and John just want to make a name for themselves; leave some sort of legacy behind. Their mission: complete 10 crazy dangerous stunts throughout the school year and upload each of the videos onto YouTube. But when a mysterious and unknown donor starts funding things and taking control Ben starts to wonder at what price should this legacy come at? And how far is he willing to go to achieve it?

I liked Ben. It took a while… but I finally came around to liking him. (I’m sure the very climactic ending had a part in it) It was hard to relate to him at times. And he was too much of a follower in the beginning, even against his better judgment and even though he questioned so much of what was going on. But that’s high school life isn’t it? We’ve all done, or witnessed others do, crazy or stupid things even when it’s the wrong thing. I like that this novel mirrors real life. Even though I wanted to shake and/or punch Ben many a time I admired the final decisions he made and the courage he had to finally face the right path and set foot on it.

I didn’t like that the writing style seemed very choppy at times. Like maybe the author was trying too hard to write a certain way…? *shrugs* It was heavy in the beginning and then I only caught glimpses of it in the middle and end but by that time I wanted to know how the story ended so I didn’t mind so much. Basically… there were some minor faults to the book, but I could overlook them because there was also some good story-telling going down.

What really made the novel work for me was all the back-story going on besides the insane dares the boys were doing. Ben has a lot to deal with in his life: besides surviving the dares. His family is having financial issues, his older sister finds out about the dares, his childhood love interest is getting physically abused by her douchebag of a boyfriend (who happens to be the douchebag “big man” on campus), his grades are slipping, his said childhood love interest’s best friend all of a sudden takes a interest in him…I mean seriously high school is complicated enough. Why add death-defying stunts to the check-off list Ben??

Social media and social networking has become such a HUGE part of our culture that it sometimes scares me. Everyone is so “connected” at times that it doesn’t seem normal. But reality is the internet and real life has become so intertwined that it is in fact the norm. When something crazy or cool or outrageous happens how soon is it posted on the internet after being captured by some smart phone or other device?? Super fast! That’s how fast! Dare Me (along with many other books out there) sheds light on how far technology has come and just how much some lives revolve around it. I’m going to be checking out Devine’s other book Tapout and definitely his future work.

Dare Me Eric Devine Books Reviews

How far would you go for your 15 minutes of fame? Dare Me by Eric Devine is a grim treatise on what three teen boys would do for attention and the twisted fascination people have with watching others experience a “reality” above and beyond their own mundane existence, especially if it’s dangerous. To some perhaps it seems as if our social media existences are more desirable than our real lives or we think they are. No matter how much these characters wish they were the people others see, at the end of the day, they’re just ordinary human beings. In Dare Me, most everyone is a fake, everyone is a liar, and it’s apparently ok when it’s done in search of fame, notoriety, and attention. Rather than facing their problems, the characters of Dare Me hide behind a façade of bravado, an image of bravery that’s as thin as their hope for something better.
I deducted one star from my rating because I could not truly empathize with the main character, Ben. I’m just a reader that likes a hero to cheer for and I have to admit, I was disturbed by Ben’s dishonesty, his language, and his treatment of girls. Perhaps he was so deeply flawed that I failed to connect with him. I found myself wishing he would change more over the course of the story, rather than at the very end, and only after terrible events had taken place. This might be the author’s point though, that some people can’t accept reality until it smacks them in the face.
Dare Me leaves me rather sad for today’s young people and hopeful that not everyone has completely lost touch with reality. Hauntingly powerful and reminiscent of another of my favorite authors, Chris Crutcher, Dare Me is a disturbing and thought provoking examination of the soul of today’s youth.
It all sounds so simple to Ben when his friend Ricky proposes it complete a set of outrageous dares during their senior year and they'll go down as legends in their high school. Along with their friend John, they pull off the first dare--wind surfing on the roof of a car--without getting hurt. But as the video of the dare goes viral, each successive stunt must take on more risk if the friends are to keep their audience enthralled. Ben is afraid to continue, but he's even more afraid to go back to what he was like before.

Dare Me by Eric Devine is a chilling look at the restlessness that teens on the cusp of change can feel. Taking risks doesn't seem like a bad thing, particularly when the consequences aren't fully grasped. All three boys face tough situations at home Ben's father loses his job and the family must cut expenses and move from their long time home. John is set to get a basketball scholarship to college, even though he's not sure he even wants to keep playing. His dad pressures him to keep up. And Ricky's parents are barely even in the picture, leaving him to figure things out on his own. The situation is ripe for prompting the boys to make rash decisions, regardless of what happens as a result.

Dare Me brings to light several important issues teens face that are good to discuss, including physical abuse in a relationship, the pressure high school kids can feel to perform at a high level so they can get into good colleges, and more pressure to fit in with their peers yet stand out in a way that brings praise. Behind it all is the role social media plays in pushing kids to do things they may not otherwise be motivated to do. Riveting and fast paced, this book is hard to put down. I recommend it for mother-daughter book clubs with girls aged 14 and up.

The publisher gave me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
